  1. Report on WP 4 status NEFIS mid-term and work package 2/3 meeting Vienna 24-25.05.04 Andreas Schuck

  2. Structure of this presentation • Objectives amd deliverables • Agreed data sets • Metadata • Some first linked examples • Timeline for WP 4 activities

  3. Objectives • to identify a limited number of datasets for input to the EFIS • to prepare metadata records for Internet-, PC based datasets • to provide and prepare actual sample datasets available through the EFIS system

  4. Deliverables D6: Metadata record for each provided dataset D7: Readily prepared sample datasets Deliverables and milestones Milestones • Meeting for data provider group (12) • Comprehensive set of metadata records for various types of forest data (Month 18) • Prepared sample datasets from NEFIS partners (Month 21)

  5. Agreed datasets(Kick-off meeting, Solsona)

  6. Common sub-set of NFI data Provide data separately for: • Administrative regions within each country (data provider to choose at what level; ~5-30 regions) • Forest types (free choice, preferably species related; ~3-10 types) • Age classes (0-20, 21-40, 41-60, 61-80, 81-100, 100+; also ‘irregular stands’ Parameters in the core datasets • Total land area • Total forest area • Total volume for each main species (including a class ”other”) • Total increment (per year) for each main species • Total number of stems for each main species (above a country-specific threshold) • Average site quality NOTE: Each of the above bullets will be one table (with a separate metadata description)

  7. Common sub-set of NFI data Examples of parameters in optional datasets • The same tables for 1-2 previous time points • Tables of other features according to the same structure, e.g. dead wood volume • Maps presenting specific features for the entire country • Graphs showing the development over time for specific features • Data for individual plots General issues: • Use the most recent data • Definitions of parameters will vary. Definitions should be included in metadata description of the dataset or link given to an [accessible] document containing definitions. • Provide data as tables (e.g. Excel worksheets)

  8. Additional data sets (by partners) Sveriges Lantbruksuniversitet – Dept. of Forest Resource Management and Geomatics (Partner 9) NFI data: • Standard datasets for three additional time points (separated by 5years) to allow time series displays • A dataset with dead wood volumes according to the same structure as the standard NFI datasets • Data at the level of single NFI plots describing the current state(volume by species, cut volume, and age), and plot level forecasts from 2000 to 2100 • Graph showing growth and removals in Sweden • Map showing the site quality in Swedish forests

  9. Additional data sets (cont.) Regione Dell’UMbria – Servizio Programmazione Forestale (Partner 11) • Dataset on interventions made under the reg. 2081/93 (5b) during the period 1995-1999. This dataset can be merged with that of Reg. 2080/92. European Forest Institute (Partner 1) • Data set on economic accessibility of forests in the Russian region of Novgorod Any other voluntary additions?

  10. Metadata • All WP 4 partners have provided a first version of metadata accompanying the actual data • Partners have documented their experiences • Mainly related to keyword lists, missing sub-elements, quality and access rights • Metadata records and comments made available to WP2 (minutes and document including all metadata records) • Further elaboration based on outputs from WP 2

  11. Linked data - some first examples (forest resources; forest products trade)

  12. Linked data - some first examples, cont. (ICP Forests Level I)

  13. Linked data - some first examples, cont. (ICP Forests Level I) Query to database: Picea abies; all countries; year 2003; defoliation classes 2, 3 and 4.

  14. Linked data - some first examples, cont. (ICP Forests Level I)

  15. Timeline for WP 4 activities
