  4. Collaborative Learning • Collaborative learning is a situation in which two or more people learn or attempt to learn something together. More specifically, collaborative learning is based on the model that knowledge can be created within a population where members actively interact by sharing experiences and take on asymmetry roles. (Wikipedia) • Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is a relatively new educational paradigm within collaborative learning which uses technology in a learning environment to help mediate and support group interactions in a collaborative learning context. CSCL systems use technology to control and monitor interactions, to regulate tasks, rules, and roles, and to mediate the acquisition of new knowledge. (Wikipedia)

  9. Wikipedia • A kangaroo is a marsupial from the family Macropodidae. In common use the term is used to describe the largest species from this family, the Red Kangaroo, the Antilopine Kangaroo, and the Eastern and Western Grey Kangaroo of the Macropus genus. The family also includes many smaller species which include the wallabies, tree-kangaroos, wallaroos, pademelons and the Quokka, some 63 living species in all.[1] Kangaroos are endemic to the continent of Australia, while the smaller macropods are found in Australia and New Guinea.

  16. A simple definition • The www is a universal database of information that is accessible to people around the world which links easily to other pieces of information so that any user can quickly find the things that are most important to him or herself.

  20. How can we capture these gems? • In other words, how can we tame the www and capitalise on the rich information? • by incorporating them into rich learning experiences for students • by incorporating them into WebQuests

What is a WebQuest? • An inquiry oriented activity where some (or all) of the information that the learners interact with comes from resources on the internet • Not the same as a website • A form of structured research project • Provide scaffolded learning within a constructivist learning environment

WebQuest • Basic strategy: • Devise an an inquiry activity that presents students with a central question or problem and related task • Web-based and other resources provide grist from which students construct meaning • The learning process is supported by prompting / scaffolds to promote higher-order thinking • End products of are often put out to the world for some type of real feedback

  23. Use when: • You want students to tackle big, complex or grey questions • Students could benefit from cooperative learning • The subject warrants a deeper understanding • Students would benefit from a more authentic, real-world learning experience (PBL)

  24. 2 levels of WebQuests • Short-term • Designed to be completed in 1 to 3 class periods • Long-term - Designed to be completed in 1 week to 1 month in the classroom
