  1. Side Effects of Modafinil and the Correct Dosage Modafinil is one of the most popular ‘smart drugs’ in the market as it promises enhanced memory, motivation and the ability to focus. Even though there are several benefits of taking this drug, it is important to first understand how it works and what are its side effects? According to experts, this drug has multiple actions because it acts on various neurotransmitter systems inside the brain. Neurotransmitters are chemicals that are responsible for transmitting signals between cells inside the brain. The drug is said to affect the dopamine system and this helps an individual become more alert. It is also said to affect norepinephrine that again helps in becoming more alert and boosts the ability to focus. Modafinil is believed to affect histamine that helps in staying awake. The main reason behind this drug’s popularity is its ability to boost working memory. Modafinil enhances short-term memory by at least 10% because it influences glutamate, a neurotransmitter. Effect of the drug however varies according to the dose taken. For instance, in a study based on PET scans, it was found that doses of 400mg had effects in brain areas that are involved in dependence and substance abuse. However, the study also suggested that prolific use of the drug over a long time period can have damaging effects on the sleep architecture of individuals as well. For instance, some people take Modafinil when they want to cure their jetlag. They don’t take the drug on a daily basis; however, students often take a dose when they feel too sleepy or when they find it difficult to focus during exams. Regular intake of Modafinil can affect their sleep pattern to a great extent because the drug will be in their system when they wish to go to bed and the wake-promoting effects of it won’t let them sleep. Side Effects of Modafinil Modafinil is a powerful stimulant that is prescribed for increasing wakefulness in patients but you can experience some side effects too if you take Modafinil on a regular basis. For instance, you might experience headache, dizziness, nervousness or nausea.
