MANU REPRESENTED THE EARLIEST OF THE DHARMA SHASTRA SCHOOLS. • THE CODE OF MANU IS A METRICAL LAW BOOK CONSISTING OF 2685 VERSES.IT DEALS WITH THE INSTITUTES OF THE SACREDV LAW WHICH HE EXPLAINED TO THE SAGES OF OLD,WHO DESIRE TO HAVE ABRIDGED AND PROMULGATES THE DANDNITI,A COLOSSAL TREATISE COMPOSED BY BRAHMA ,THE CREATOR,DEALING WITH LIFE ,MORALS AND THE GOVERNMENT..IT IS THIS TRADITION THAT IS REPRESENTED IN THE ORDINANCE KNOWN TO US AS THE MANUSMRITI.

MANU DEVOTES THREE CHAPTERS (vii-ix) TO DISCUSS TOPICS AS KING AND THE STETE,THEIR ORIGIN AND NATURE,THE DUTIES OF THE KING,MINISTERS AND OTHER STATE FUNCTIONARIES,THE JUDICIARY,SOURCES OF LAW,CLASSIFICATION OF LAW ,PUNISHMENTS,THE ROLE OF THE JUDGES,PRINCIPLES OF TAXATION ,WAR AND DIPLOMACY AND THE ETHICAL PRINCIPLES OF WARFARE. • THE REST OF THE WORK IS DEVOTED TO DEAL MORE COMPREHENSIVELY SUCH MORAL PROBLEMS AS PENANCE AND EXPIATION AND PURELY RELIGIOUS TOPICS LIKE THE TRANSMIGRATION OF SOUL AND FINAL BEATITUDE. • HE HELD THAT THE DHARMA WAS THE SUPREME POWER IN THE STATE AND THE KING WAS MERELY AN INSTRUMENT TO REALIZE THE GOEAL OF DHARMA.

THE STATE WAS NOT AN END INITSELF BUT A MEANS TO AN END ,AMEANS TO ENABLE PEOPLE TO ATTAIN THE FOUR PURUSHARTHAS VIZ DHARMA ,ARTHA,KAM MOKSHA. • A REGULAR CLASSIFICATION OF LAW UNDER THE EIGHTEEN TITLES APPEARS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANUSMRITI. • IN RESPECT OF THE CRIMINAL LAW ,CASTE PRIVILEGES AND THE DISABILITIES ARE DISCUSSED IN A CAREFUL MANNER. • WHAT IS MORE IS THE EMPHASIS ON THE LAW OF RELATION.MANU THOUGHT PUNISHMENT BOTH RETRIBUTIVE AND DETERRANT.THERE IS GREAT INSISTENCE ON JUSTICE AND EQUITY.
