  9. You hear that a pinch of soil may contain millions of organisms. What optical tools would you use to see these organisms and to study their structure? What is the structure of a cell?

  10. Vocabulary Practice: • Phschool.com • Code: cvj- 1030

  11. Section 1: Discovering Cells • What are cells? • How did the invention of the microscope contribute to knowledge about living things? • What is the cell theory? • How are the cells of multicellular organisms organized?

  12. Cells Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things.

  13. Microscopes!!! • The invention of microscopes made it possible for people to discover and learn about cells.

  14. Who Discovered Cells? • Robert Hooke- discovered “small rooms” in cork using a compound microscope- called Cells. • Leeuwenhoek- discovered “little animals” in pond water using a microscope. • Schleiden and Schwann- Concluded that plants and animals are made up of cells.

  15. Development of the Cell Theory The cell theory states the following: • All living things are composed of cells. • Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. • All cells are produced from other cells.

  16. Unicellular and Multicellular Unicellular, or single-celled, organisms include bacteria, the most numerous organisms on Earth. Multicellular organisms are composed of many cells. Unicellular Multicellular

  17. Organization • Cells ----------- Tissues-------- Organs-------- • Organ System-------- • ANIMAL------US!!!!

  18. Going Beyond: Links on Cell TheoryPHSchool.comCode: scn-0311 Click the SciLinks button for links on the cell theory.

  19. Section 2: Looking Inside Cells What role do the cell wall and cell membrane play in the cell? What is the role of the nucleus in the cell? What organelles are found in the cytoplasm and what are their functions? How do cells differ?

  20. Plant and Animal Cells

  21. Plant and Animal Cells Activity Click the Active Art button to open a browser window and access Active Art about plant and animal cells.

  22. Holding It All Together • Cell Membrane • Job: hold in cytoplasm, all nutrients in & waste out • phospholipids • Cell Wall • Job: provides strength and support to the cell membrane • cellulose fibers

  23. Nucleus The nucleus is the cell’s control center, directing all of the cell’s activities and stores information. Job: Holds DNA

  24. Mitochondrion and Chloroplasts • Mitochondria are known as the “powerhouses” of the cell because they convert energy in food molecules to energy the cell can use to carry out its functions. • Chloroplasts: energy converting organelle in plant. Make the plantGREEN !!!! • Photosynthesis:sunlight energy is trapped by chlorophylland used to make sugar

  25. Endoplasmic Reticulum and ribosomes The endoplasmic reticulum is similar to the system of hallways in a building. Proteins and other materials move throughout the cell by way of the endoplasmic reticulum. The spots on this organelle are ribosomes, which produce proteins.

  26. Golgi Body The Golgi bodies receive proteins and other newly formed materials from the endoplasmic reticulum, package them, and distribute them to other parts of the cell.

  27. In other words….. • Job: processes, packages, and ships like a Post office of the cell

  28. Vacuole very large membrane-covered chamber that store water or other liquids • water reservoir

  29. Lysosomes!! Lysosomes are special vesicles in animal cells that contain enzymes to digest waste and worn-out or damaged organelles. • Can kill the cell if it breaks
