Detention before March the 8th • Over ten activists were interrogated in multiple cities • Five of them were detained on 3/8 at Haidian District Detention Center in Beijing • They are: Li Tingting, Wu Tingting, Zheng Churan, Wang Man, and Wu Rongrong • They are affiliated with various NGOs but they belong in the same young feminist activist group

  3. “Causing Disorder”? • The evidence of their “crimes”: stickers to call public attention to sexual harassments on busses • Their families have not received any formal notices so far. The detention with the specific criminal charge will keep them in the detention center until April 13th when the decision will be made to release or arrest them, or let them be bailed. An arrest warrant may lead to several years of imprisonment.

  4. “Crimes” They Have Committed • The five represent a new generation of feminist activists who have initiated a range of actions, such as “Occupy Men’s Rooms,” and “Wounded Brides” • They have also supported the activism for the rights of LGBT, hepatitis B and AIDS carriers, disabled and poor women, factory women workers, and rural women.

The Whole World is Watching • Feminists in South Korea, India, Malaysia, England, US, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other locations have organized protests of the detention. • Transnational Feminist Organizations and important media have raised voices of concerns. • Concerns expressed by EU, England and US.

Deteriorating Situation • Five feminists in detention experienced illegal interrogation methods; prevented from seeing their lawyers; two of the five fell ill and transferred to detention hospital. Requests for bail were rejected. • An office of a NGO was raided by the police on 3/24 • The speaker of the Chinese Foreign Affairs Ministry said “no one has the right to demand their release.
