  2. How does a Deep Sea Vent Form? • A deep sea vent also known as a hydrothermal vent, forms when tectonic plates cause a crevice to open in the bottom of the ocean floor. The water rushes in, but tries to turn around because of the magma. Some have tops that are created through bits of different metals that are in the hot, mineral rich water spewing out of the vent. http://www.seasky.org/deep-sea/assets/images/black-smoker-se39.jpg

Deep Sea Vents (continued) • Tectonic plates are huge pieces of land that make up the Earth’s crust, separating it from its magma filled interior • Magma is what makes up most of the interior of the earth, it is basically lava that hasn’t reached the surface of the Earth • Some chemicals that are present include: iron, sulfide, silicon, calcium, barium, and more. • These different minerals can change the color of some of these vents.

  4. Temperature • The water around the area without these vents is only about 32-35 degrees Fahrenheit • The water that is actually coming out of the vent can be as high as 750 degrees Fahrenheit. http://mountainhopeclinic.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/temperature.jpg
