Hiring Protocol Peter Dods President Easy Music Investments Inc. Course Title Creating Your Store’s Personality Through Your Employees
Tell me your story… • Email conversation is the starting point • Tell me about yourself – 5 minutes • Don’t talk – Listen • Watch Body Language • Talk too much? • Talk too little? • Take notes (here and after)…
We Screen • “We run a criminal background check” • I highly recommend you do this if it is legal in your state… • I would run a credit check too if it were legal in Hawaii • 99.9% of the time, they will tell you if they have a record right then and there – saves time • Check Facebook too?
Diagnostic Test – Compression? • Administer series of questions that relate to your business • Rate yourself • Mark their response to questions • What is their attitude like when answering? • Fill in the blank of guitar parts
Writing Test • Ask them to respond to a fictitious email and gauge: • Writing skills • Problem solving • Performance under time pressure • Computer literacy How you write = how you think
Floor Test • How and what do you play? • Can you tune a guitar easily and quickly? • Can you sing? • Came prepared with a pick? • Know how to coil a cable? • Great Gauge for decisiveness… Playing is the least important thing I look for in a hire…TAKE NOTES!!!!
Real Interview • Ask a wide range of questions • Make sure you ask the non-negotiables • Schedule? • Access to a car? • Able to lift heavy things etc? • Give them a chance to ask you questions… • What do they ask? Selfish questions? Big Picture questions… • Do they give you the chance to talk?
Talk to Managers…. I like to pass them off to my managers after my interview and get a few more people to get a feel for them. I like for the managers to also want to make the hire. If they say no, I rarely push the issue.
