  1. Tuesday, May 22nd Compare the picture on page #348 in the text book with the poster on page #353 in textbook. Note 3 similarities AND 3 differences in the two pictures of the same event.

  2. Here is the plan… • Students will understand how propaganda is used to shape image. • Students will match rivals from history and popular culture. • Students will begin to comprehend the origins of the rivalry between the Communists AND the Nationalists in China.

  4. Assignment #1 • Make a list of 5 GREAT rivalries throughout history / popular culture / sports. • Consider (write) what are some things that all good rivalries (whether in sports or history) have in common?

  9. Assignment #2 • Using the textbook pages #347 – 348 AND 351-352 answer the following questions about these two historical rivals on the second side of your handout.

  10. Nationalists • Chiang Kai-Shek and his USA backed government lost control of China. • Chiang and his followers were forced to flee to Taiwan.

  11. Communism

  12. Communists • Mao Zedong and his followers were victorious in the Chinese Civil War or Communist Revolution. • They were heavily influenced by communism in Russia.

  13. 3 Goals of the Revolution • Better Life for the Poor! • Modern Economy. • Restore China’s position as a major world power!

  15. Visual summary • You will be assigned either the “Great Leap Forward” on page 355-356 or the Cultural Revolution from page 356 in textbook. • Read your section only. • Create a visual summary showing the intent (goal), the methods, and the ultimate success or failure of the program.

  16. Two Sides - Positive • Mao united China. • Mao helped to restore China to a place of world power. • Mao is still “officially revered” in modern China.

  17. Two Sides - Negative • Over 20 million Chinese died during Mao’s reign. • Mao did not improve economy / life of most peasants. • Mao’s Red Guard abused/ killed people who disagreed with him.
