What are Earthquakes and why do they occur? • Earthquakes are when two plate boundaries meet. • It is either caused by friction, • It usually is most strongest at the heart of the city. • It is measured on the Richter scale and the number before is one hundred times more greater than the one before.

  3. Why do they occur? • They happen when there is a very sudden movement between two plate boundaries. • It happens when plates are sliding, colliding or parting from each other. • Examples are San Andreas Fault in California.

  4. San Francisco Earthquake. • The San Francisco earthquake hit with hard impact as it caused fires which raged through the city. • It measured 6.9 on the Richter scale and it killed more than 63 people and injured more than 4000 people. • People were also killed by falling landslides and broken buildings. • It left 5000 homeless.

  5. Impact of the San Francisco earthquake. • In October 1989 the Pacific plate suddenly moved so vigorously past the north of the San Andreas Fault. • The Earthquake’s impact was mostly felt in Santa Cruz mountains just south of San Francisco. • Mainly the people were killed by fires which were started by gas explosions and wooden houses spread it more. • Businesses lost lots of money and there were disruption on roads as well because of all the destruction as people tried to flee from the half destroyed cities.
