  1. TDS Projections in GroundwaterMaximum Benefit Demonstrations for the Beaumont, Chino North, and Yucaipa Management Zones October 16, 2006

  2. Presentation Outline What questions are being addressed The method Recommendations

  3. What Questions Were Being Addressed? • What would the ambient TDS concentration be under the proposed basin management plan? • What would the ambient TDS concentration be under the existing Basin plan?

  4. Method Used for the 2004 Basin Plan Update • Used a modeling approach • Rigorous water transaction approach to estimate most salt fluxes; other fluxes from best available information • Simple mixing model to estimate TDS time history

  5. Transactional Hydrology • Water demands, water supply plans and wastewater disposal plans • Deep percolation of applied water • Artificial recharge • Supplemental water • Storm water • Groundwater pumping

  6. Rest of the Hydrology • Subsurface inflow and outflow • Other groundwater discharge • Deep percolation of precipitation and storm water discharge

  7. Simple Mixing Model • Why do simple? • Constantly-Stirred Reactor Model (CSRM)

  8. Proposed Water Quality Objectives Based on Historical Ambient Water Quality for Chino Basin Management Zones

  9. Recommendation • Use the best modeling approach available
