Broadway - Posters for Living Room Decoration | Big Wall Posters for Bedroom This was taken in the middle of the street on Nashville’s Broadway and it’s normally PACKED with thousands of people! But in this photo, it’s absolutely deserted. Here’s the story…. I’ve wanted to take this picture for many years, it’s been an absolute dream of mine forever. I’ve gone down there so many times, but never got the image I wanted, because there are always hundreds of cars, drunk Bachelorettes, pedestrians, and horse-drawn carriages. It’s impossible to stand in the middle of the intersection with a tripod and get the shot. I’ve tried many times. However, during the Pandemic, and the lockdowns, and the riots... there was a chance.
So I hopped on my motorcycle and drove downtown late at night. I was hoping to get a view that no one else had ever captured! As soon as I got to Broadway, my face fell with despair. My heart pounded in my chest, I could almost throw up. The place was not deserted. My photographic opportunity was completely blocked! Well, almost blocked. There were police cars on one side of the road with their bright flashing lights on, the flashing lights totally ruining the scene. I waited, for what felt like an eternity, for them to leave. They didn’t.
I knew I would kick myself forever if I didn’t pluck up the courage to go ask them to move. I took an anxious, deep breath and walked up to the Police Car. It was now or never. I knocked gently on the window and politely asked: “Hi. I’m a young artist and I have a dream. I’ve always wanted to photograph this scene, completely empty. Is there any way I could ask you to park around the corner for me until I get the shot? To my shock, he happily drove around the corner, out of sight. I couldn’t believe it. Still unable to believe my good fortune, I cleared the rest of the street.
I then set up my photography equipment, in the middle of that most famous intersection, 5th and Broadway. On a normal day, this would block 4 lanes of traffic and I’d be immediately run over in multiple directions by oncoming traffic. Now, it was a GhostTown. I used old technology from the 1930s to take the picture, vintage/antique lenses paired with a modern camera, and got a 30-second duration photograph. I made dozens of attempts, to get just the right one! I own 3 art galleries in Nashville and this is now my #1 most popular piece!
