  1. Abb. 30.4Kristallstruktur des bakteriellen Kaliumkanals KcsA im offenen Zustand. Der Kanal bildet ein Tetramer (links) aus jeweils drei Helices. Zwei diese Helices (rot) durchspannen die gesamte Membran, während sich die dritte, kürzere Helix (blauviolett) auf eine Höhle im Inneren des Kanals ausrichtet. Dort streifen die mit acht Wassermolekülen umgebenen Kaliumionen (violette Kugeln) ihre Wasserhülle ab und treten in den Selektivitätsfilter ein (rechts). Unten vor dem Eintritt in den Kanal ist ein Kaliumion mit seiner quadratisch-antiprismatischen Koordination gezeigt. Die Carbonylgruppen aus der Hauptkette übernehmen die Achterkoordination um die Kaliumionen mit gleicher Geometrie und transferieren sie über die Membran.
