  1. King Saud University College of Computer and Information Sciences Information Technology Department IT422 - Intelligent systems Research Assignment How to get a full mark in research?!

  2. The Mission • You are asked to do a comprehensive research on one of the suggested topics

  3. Mission’s steps

  4. Step 1 - Getting Started • Goal: • Understand the assignment: • Read the instructions for the assignment • Know the type of the final product • Know the grading criteria • Know the deadline and plan your work upon it

  5. Step 1 - Getting Started

  6. Step 2 - Discovering and Choosing a Topic • Goal: • Choosing a topic • Get a "bird's eye view" of the suggested topic with a quick internet search • Brainstorm, alone and with others • Narrow down the list of topics to things you and your colleagues are interested in • Go a little bit in depth with the chosen topics • Choose the most suitable one, make sure noone chose it in your section • Checklist: • AI techniques and algorithms? • Problem being solved in the chosen topic? • While searching, do not forget to gather some useful resources

  7. Suggested research topics list • Intelligent multimedia • AI contribution in Information security • Solving classification problems using AI • Medical system Diagnosis • AI in Internet search engines. • AI technologies in cars • Intelligent Network Technologies • Computational Intelligence • AI and Human Computer Interaction • AI in E-commerce and E-governance • AI and Assistance for the Elderly and People with Disabilities • AI and The arts (music, painting, creative writing, etc.) • AI and Virtual Reality • AI in mobile devices • AI in games • AI in education • AI in Natural Language Processing

  8. Step 3 - Gathering Information • Goal: • Exploring your topic • finding, collecting and recording • You'll be locating books, articles, videos, WebPages and other resources about your topic and reading to learn! • Your search should be focused and specific • As you read, start taking notes about your topic • Keep track of the bibliographic references for the information you're using • Start organizing your notes into logical groups • You may notice a gap in your research, or a more heavy weighting to one aspect of the subject than what you had intended, if so fix it!

  9. How to cite things? • IEEE citation style: • www.ieee.org/documents/ieeecitationref.pdf Artificial intelligence (AI) is the science of making machines do things that would require intelligence if done by humans [1]. ‘The art of creating machines that perform functions that require intelligence when performed by people’ [2]. Kurzweil, The Age of Intelligent Machines. MIT Press, 1990.

  10. Step 3 - Gathering Information • What kind of info should I look for? • Introduction : • Overview (Problem definition) • Basic knowledge and definitions • AI techniques and algorithms: • What AI techniques and algorithms have been used? • E.g. DFS, BFS, Decision tree, Expert system, Fuzzy logic, Genetic algorithm etc. • If it is one of the things we have seen on the course, discuss how it is being applied. • If it is something we haven't seen on the course, provide a brief description of it. • Common Mistake: mentioning techniques, algorithms, that are not related to AI • Very very important thing: do not drift away from the important thing which is AI usage in your chosen topic

  11. Step 3 - Gathering Information • What kind of info should I look for? • Applications: • What kind of applications used it • Where it has been used • How AI techniques used help to solve problems in the chosen topic • References

  12. Step 4 - Preparing to Write • Goal: • Prepare yourself to write • Analyzing and organizing your information and forming the report; • Exclude irrelevant information; • Prepare an outline; • Group important information according to its suitable section in the report .

  13. Suggested Report Outline • Your report should have 4 sections as follows: • Introduction • AI techniques, algorithms • Applications • Conclusion • Number of pages: 7 pages minimum.

  14. [2 pages or less] [2 page or less] [3 page or less] [1/2 page] [1/2 page]

  15. Step 5 - Writing the report • Goal: • Writing, revising and finalizing the report • After understanding the topic, write it using your own words. • Checklist: • Overview • AI techniques and algorithms • Applications • Conclusion • Number of pages = 5 • Information are cited and references are listed

  16. Detailed Grading criteria (1) • Report (4) • (3) if report is complete, clear, consistent; • (2) if report is complete but full of blind copies / inconsistent copies / mistakes / not good discussion OR incomplete but with own words; • (1) if report is incomplete and with some unreferenced copies; • (0) if report is copied.

  17. Detailed Grading criteria (2) • AI techniques (6) • (6) complete discussion; • (4) inconsistent, not logical copy / not in enough depth; • (2) weak / incomplete; • (0) if AI techniques have not been addressed.
