  2. PILOT STUDY 2014 • This was conducted for seven under graduate Social Work Students undergoing their final placement at the end of their Bachelor Social Work Degree. • Based in Specialist Mental Health (CDHB) at Hillmorton Hospital • The pilot arose after various discussion’s amongst educators and clinicians within allied health. There was a concern that placements had occurred in a very ‘ad hoc’ manner lacking a clear process, coordination and a strategic pathway.

  3. Key aspects of the DEU model • Greater emphasis on team approach to student learning • Centralised coordination. • Reduced work load for student mentor (formally Field Work Educator) • Emphasising a greater variety of placement experiences. • Centralised group supervision, tutorials and pre placement planning. • Strong peer group support for student cohorts. • Group Supervision emphasising a reflective model supporting integration of theory to practice. • Improve linkages with Tertiary Education Providers (TEP’s).

  4. WHAT WAS PILOTTED (1) • Pre placement centralised coordination • Emphasis on checking suitability student/placement match including linking with TEP. • Preparation begins well before placement starting. • More discussion with allied health staff to explore potential placement experiences offering greater variety of learning. • Increased information to student and Mentor in regard to student and kind of placement offered including challenges. • Pre placement interview includes a checklist. • Pre placement booklet.

  5. WHAT WAS PILOTTED (2) (2) Assessment of student • Done together with Placement Learning Coordinator and Mentor. Formative and Summative feedback sessions for student. • Student brings evidence of learning from scenarios within their team and from group supervision, not a question/answer type of assessment.

  6. WHAT WAS PILOTTED (3) (3) Group Supervision • Preparation • Learning Agreement • Reflective Model – utilising the overall placement experience • Peer Support and Review • Students learning new roles and skills within group • Format for preparing case material
