  4. EXAMPLE #1 Step 1: Convert mixed number to improper fractions. Step 2: Find LCD (Lowest Common Denominator). Step 3: Change subtraction to addition AND second number to it’s opposite. (Subtracting is the same as adding it’s opposite!) Step 4: Look at the signs. SAME SIGN ADD (keep both signs) DIFFERENT SIGN SUBTRACT (keep sign of larger number) Step 5: Simplify!
