The Classification of The Rat • Kingdom- Animalia (Eukaryotes & Heterotrophy) • Phylum- Chordata (Anal tail) • Class- Mammalia (hair) • Order- Rodentia (Non-Flying) • Family- Muridac (Small mammals) • Genus- Rattus
Related Animals Related • Mouse ( rodents) • Possum • Porcupines • Squirrels • Guinea Pigs (mammals)
Habitat • Arboreal in nature • Lives in cypress trees • Also lives in electrical areas in human homes
Movement • Rats move on their four feet • Usually three feet are in contact with the ground at any time. • The tail is important in helping the rats keep a steady balance. • Rats can stand up on their back legs when exploring new areas.
Feedingg • Will eat almost everything • Omnivores but prefers grain, livestock feed and meat • Also know to eat soap, furs, candy and etc • Relies on water and needs 1/2 to 1 ounces daily
Circulation/Respiration • Consists of a heart, blood and blood vessels • Breathes through lungs • 4 chambered heart • Closed circulatory system • Circulatory system similar to humans
Reproduction • Female doe’s participates in mating rituals • Flirts by wagging their tails and putting rump in the air • Interactions last for a few seconds but repeated for 24 hours • Pregnant for 21-23 days • 1-24 pups but 6 is averaged sized • pups are born blind, deaf and naked
Nervous System • A central nervous system (consists of a brain and a spinal cord) • A peripheral nervous system (nerves and ganglia outside of the brain and spinal cord) • An autonomic nervous system ( Acts as an control system for the peripheral system)
Interesting Facts • The white is a albino strain of the Norway Rat • Rats are poor climbers, but very good swimmers • Rats don’t have thumbs • Rats use high-frequency sounds to communicate with each other • A rats life span is about 2 to 3 years • Rats are considered a delicacy in India
