  2. La voluntad • The subjunctive is used after verbs and expressions of volition. • Verbs and expressions of volition express a wish (strong or weak), an order, a suggestion, or the forbidding of an action.

La voluntad • When using the subjunctive with expressions of volition, the wish must concern someone or something other than the subject of the sentence. • I want that you study.  Quiero que estudies. • I forbid you to smoke.  Te prohibo que fumes. • When the wish concerns the subject, an infinitive construction is used. • I want to study.  Quiero estudiar. • She wishes to eat.  Ella desea comer.

  4. Un poco más • The construction “Ojalá que + present subjunctive” expresses hope. • Ojalá que haga buen tiempo. • Ojalá que yo saque una buena nota.

  5. Más • Indirect object pronouns are often used with the following verbs: pedir, mandar, rogar, suplicar, aconsejar, recomendar, sugerir, permitir and prohibir. • Le sugiero que ella riegue las plantas. • Le pido a Luis que arregle su dormitorio.

  6. Vamos a practicar • Traduce: • We suggest (to him) that he cut the grass. • They want us to clean. (They want that we clean.) • She wishes to dance. • I demand that you shake the rugs. • You prefer to eat early.

  9. ¿Por qué usan el subjuntivo? El resultado no es seguro. Mis padres trabajan para que yo vaya a la universidad. Voy a estudiar en caso de que tengamos un examen mañana. Cierran la ventana antes de que llueva.

Expresiones que requieren el subjuntivo o el indicativo. • Así que as soon as • Cuando when • Después de que after • En cuanto as soon as • Hasta que until • Tan pronto como as soon as Subjunctive is only required when the main clause expresses a future action or command. The event has not yet occurred.

  11. Modelos • Ana va a llamarte cuando llegue. • Ana te llamó cuando llegó. • Lo ayudaré hasta que Carlos venga. • Lo ayudé hasta que Carlos vino. • Ayúdame hasta que venga Carlos. • Cada día, te ayudo hasta que viene Carlos. • When speaking of past events or habitual events, indicative is used to indicate factual information.
