  1. Why do IAS Aspirants Prefer Sociology? In the UPSC exam Mains, all aspirants can choose one subject for the optional paper. On the other hand, the Indian Civil Service offers 48 subjects from which each aspirant can choose only one, depending on the subject that he is comfortable with. It has been noticed lately that UPSC aspirants have preferred choosing sociology for quite a long time. Therefore, for acing in the sociology paper, they have joined the best coaching for sociology optional. However, you must be wondering why people choose sociology as an optional paper over other subjects. Of course, there are reasons for it. Before you join the best sociology coaching in Delhi, here are some reasons for which IAS aspirants prefer choosing sociology for their optional paper. 1.Concise syllabus As we all know, the UPSC syllabus is vast. None of you will want to study anything that is too long after the UPSC paper is completed. You will, of course, prefer such a subject for the UPSC optional paper that is concise and can be covered easily. Likewise, students have preferred choosing sociology for its short syllabus. IAS aspirants have seen that they can cover the sociology syllabus within 3 to 4 months, provided they study the subject every day. 2.Easy syllabus One of the biggest reasons to choose sociology is its accessible syllabus. As the name suggests, sociology deals with society at large and its constituents. Therefore, even if IAS aspirants do not have any background knowledge on sociology, they can easily handle the subject. Moreover, sociology as a subject deals with society, its developments, family, the laws of society, etc. In short, whatever you see around yourself is what constitutes the optional sociology paper. Hence, studying sociology will not be a problem. 3.Helps in the general studies paper

  2. Take a close look of the sociology syllabus. You will find that some aspects or topics included in the general studies paper in UPSC are common with the UPSC sociology optional syllabus. So, if you study once for sociology, you also cover it for the general studies section. For example, in the first paper of general studies, the topics are related to Indian society, issues on women, social empowerment, communalism, etc. All of these are contained in the sociology syllabus. Again, in the second paper of general studies, you will study about development and management of social sectors, welfare schemes, NGOs, SHGs, etc., which are covered in the optional sociology paper. 4.Helps in the interview round Since sociology deals with society and issues related to society, it can help you in the interview round or the personality test round. This means the examiners ask you questions that are related to your surroundings. Studying sociology in-depth will help you answer them at ease. It will make you real and grounded to answer questions from a practical point of view. 5.Helps you score better and is a safe, optional subject As has already been mentioned, the sociology syllabus is concise and can be covered within 3 to 4 months. Therefore, you get ample time to revise and study all the topics. The more you revise, the more are the chances of scoring better. Besides, sociology is considered a safe, optional subject as you can easily score more than 350 with thorough studying of the subject and revision. 6.Supports the essay paper In the UPSC exam, every candidate is asked to write essays in the Mains on topics related to society. Studying sociology will help you enrich your essays with better social explanations. Also, you can improve your essay by adding a few quotes that you have studied in sociology. Conclusion Therefore, choosing sociology as a UPSC optional subject is smart work because it will help you achieve a better score in the UPSC Mains. If required, you can join some IAS coaching centers for better results.
