  • Gov’t owns all land, businesses and factories
  • Control over all public policies, government, and selection of party members
  • Government hand picks people for key jobs
  • Needs of society are more important than individual rights
  • No freedom of speech, press or can one form an organization of any sort
  • No freedom of religious worship in public
why would anyone want a communist form of government

  • After WWII, this was the only form of hope to restore economic prosperity to those countries destroyed by war

  • 1917: Russian Revolution-Lenin rids Czar Nicholas II and his family (Anastasia).
  • 1917: Lenin becomes the dictator taking Karl Marx’s ideas of communism and using them as his new form of government for Russia.

  • 1940’s: WWII-Stalin is the dictator.
  • Started out as allies with Germany and Hitler.
  • Switched to allies of GB and US when Stalin learns of Hitler’s plan to conquer the Soviet Union

  • Space Race-the race to be the first country in space: The US focused much of their education on math and science during this time period in schools
  • Star Wars: Race to build nuclear weapons and satellites to destroy and intercept nuclear weapons

  • 1949-50’s: Soviet Union helps out North Korea when South Korea and the US try to make Korea a democratic country
  • Soviets would help with the Northern section
  • This would be anything north of the 38th parallel

  • Soviet and US friendship was breaking due to the Soviets using a communist form of government
  • US worried that all of Korea would become communist
  • The UN said that Korea would vote to decided what kind of government and rulers would take over
  • Soviets said that there would be no vote in Northern Korea
  • They established an army in North Korea

  • American troops were stationed in Korea to prevent North Korea and Soviets from spreading communism
  • US troops stationed in Japan moved to S. Korea
  • Truman and Congress never declared war on N. Korea
  • Truman called it the Korean Conflict: The mission to stop communism from spreading

  • N. Korean troops moved into S. Korea with Soviet and Chinese help

  • 1960’s-1970’s: Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia and Afghanistan.
  • US sides with Afghanistan in fighting the Soviet Union by supplying them with weapons.
1980 s
  • Moscow hosts 1980 summer Olympics-The US and other countries boycott the games on the basis that Moscow is a communist country.
  • 1980: Lake Placid, NY hosts the winter Olympics. Soviet Union does not boycott. The US hockey team beats Soviet Union in ice hockey and lifts US spirits in the fight of the Cold War.
  • 1989: Reagan and Gorbachev hold talks-The Berlin Wall separating East Germany and West Germany comes down with the help of Gorbachev

  • 1991: Soviet Union breaks apart and becomes Russia with an elected President-Boris Yeltsin
  • Current President: Vladimir Putin-
  • Does not support US in decision to invade Iraq
