  1. WATER AUGMENTATION – A CRITICAL STEP TO SOLVE THE WATER CRISES Groundwater is the main source of freshwater for household, agricultural, & industrial sectors. It is critical for domestic use and for long-term food security for the large Indian population. Since groundwater is depleting at a fast pace due to over extraction, augmenting groundwater is a critical step to solve the water crisis.

  2. WHAT IS WATER AUGMENTATION? Water augmentation looks to increase availability and supply of water. Water augmentation can be broadly done using Three Approaches Storage Recharging Harvesting

  3. WATER AUGMENTATION TECHNIQUES Direct Surface Techniques WATER AUGMENTATION TECHNIQUES Depending on the hydro-geological specifications, the techniques are diverse & varied. Some include: Combination Surface/ Subsurface Techniques Direct Sub Surface Techniques

  4. WATER AUGMENTATION TECHNIQUES Combination Surface/ Subsurface Techniques Direct Surface Techniques Direct Sub Surface Techniques Injection wells or recharge wells Flooding Basin or percolation tanks with pit shaft or wells Basins or percolation tanks Recharge pits & shafts Dug well recharge Stream augmentation Borehole flooding Ditch & furrow system Natural openings, cavity fillings With most parts of Northern India dependent on rainfall, augmenting water availability by harvesting every drop of rainwater is a necessary starting point.

  5. RECENT INITIATIVES The government, realizing the gravity of the situation, launched the “Catch the Rain” campaign under the National Water Mission. The National Water Mission outlines the need for external partners, corporates and NGOs to step up in this effort to augment water availability.

  6. RECENT INITIATIVES Two of the actionable issues under this goal are: Support & promote water conservation & management, augmentation & preservation as part of corporate social responsibility. Encourage participation of NGOs in various water management activities.

  7. ROLE OF PARTNERSHIPS Local and national NGOs are important stakeholders in this effort of water management. These NGOs are also successful in empowering women to act for access to safe water and adequate sanitation.

  8. STORIES FROM THE GROUND S MSehgal Foundation (Sehgal Foundation) has been working since 1999 to improve the quality of life of the rural communities in India. Its Water Management program works with communities to harvest and store rainwater for direct use, and replenish groundwater by building and restoring infrastructure in villages.

  9. A POND COMES BACK TO LIFE POST REJUVENATION IN BEHROR BLOCK, ALWAR DISTRICT, RAJASTHAN  Under a CSR-supported project, S M Sehgal Foundation rejuvenated the pond in a village in Behror block, Alwar district, Rajasthan. Catchment area of the pond was increased and the structure was rejuvenatedthrough desilting and directing the water flow. The water level of nearby wells for irrigating crops has also started to go up and so is the water table.
