  1. Photostuff Digital Image Annotation Tool

  2. INTRODUCTION • Incorporation of digital media types • Unstructured digital data • Portal for managing annotations and tracking provenance

  3. Need • Available tools focus on low-level features of images to ontological concepts • Mapping of image annotation required with the domain ontology • Unaddressed image metadata management and interaction • Example - NASA

  4. Solution • Domain independent tool for managing annotations in a customizable, ontology backed manner

  5. Photostuff • Platform independent (Java based) • Allows users to annotate image and its regions with respect to ontologies specified in RDF/OWL • Compatible with multiple ontologies, spanning many domains

  6. Architecture

  7. Depiction

  8. Interaction with Web Portal • Instances • RDF/XML • Local images

  9. Image Metadata Management • Publishing markup to Semantic Web • Web portal functionality extends with MINDSWAP research group and NASA • Portal can manage many ontologies • When an instance is selected user is presented with all images in which the instance is depicted • Metadata published via image and additional sources can be integrated

  10. Web Portal

  11. Provenance Management • Mindswap maintains and stores annotations

  12. Provenance Management(contd.) • Browsing data

  13. Future Work • Automating annotation process • Region segmentation techniques • Embedding HTML forms on class definitions • Including additional digital media types

  14. Actualization

  15. Actualization(contd)
