  1. The Road to Fire Safety Resilience Russ Timpson November 2013

  2. Key Messages • Business Continuity CAN add business value • Fire is nearly always at the top of Risk Registers • The Fire Regulatory bar is very low with regard to Resilience and Business Continuity • True cost of fire • Tools, Tips and Techniques

  3. “You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink” – however, you can put a lot of salt in its foodbag.

  4. Business Continuity is a ‘Grudge’ purchase – Why? • Adds very little commercial value • Bureaucratic and time consuming • Advocates can often be the ‘Ignored Righteous’ • Another cost line item in difficult financial times • Not a sexy subject

  5. Why Fire as a BCM Progress Lever? • Loss of a major asset is always near the top of corporate risk registers • It’s Foreseeable • Most people can relate to it • Most companies have some loss experience • It can be sexy (or at least interesting)

  6. CAPEX Start Optimum Legal Compliance Building Preservation Business Continuity Full Flexibility Of Use OPEX Fire Risk ‘Corridor’

  7. True Cost of Fire • Cost of fire is increasing • £2 of business interruption cost to every £1 of fire related direct cost • Fastest growing cause of fire – Arson • Calculation of EML and PML’s is very variable • With good fire management and BCM, deductibles can be raised (costs lowered)

  8. Tools, Tips and Techniques • Claim and position your role in relation to your company risk register • ‘Own’ the management of the insurance deductible (it is the risk appetite) • Use a ‘Pools Panel’ to model loss and put a meaningful value on it • DON’T MAKE PLANS – DEVELOP PROCESSES • BCM is a maintenance process, not an initiative
