Site Construction

  • Excavation/site: ~ 3000 CY
  • Foundation:
    • Total wt: 795 T
    • Rebar: 43 T
    • Concrete: 300-350 CY = 600-710 T or ~35 trucks
  • Base Material:
    • Total: 180,000 T ~ 8036 trucks
    • Roadway: 12 mi x 20’ x 8” = 50,000T base
    • Pad sites: 130,000 T ~ 5000 T/unit

Unit Specifics

  • Tower/power unit & accessories – 806.8 K lbs – 403 T
  • Power unit: 15.6 K lbs
  • Misc accessories – 79.2 K lbs
  • Bolts: 160 – 1½” x 8 ft

Issues

  • Mostly narrow rural roads
  • Repetitive loads with excess weight / axle
  • Based on data, permitted loads not impacting roadways due to engineered axle configurations

Texas Permitting Requirements

  • OSOW Permits
    • Required if load exceeds legal size/ weight
    • Exceeds weight/axle requirement
    • Bridges requires outside engineer
  • Route inspection required
    • W: > 20’
    • H: > 18-11”
    • L: > 125’
    • Wt: > 254,300 lbs (SHL permit required)

Other than minimal permit fees, TxDOT has not received any compensation for impact on Texas roadways for 5600 units installed to date
