  1. Major Skeletal Muscles Allow the body to move

  2. Pectoralis Muscles • Major

  3. Pectoralis Muscles • Minor

  4. Pectoralis Muscles • FX—A-Dduction • EX movement—Bench press wide grip

  5. Deltoid Muscle • Anterior (front)—flexes and medially rotates the arm

  6. Deltoid Muscle • Middle portion-A-Bducts the arm • Allows you to lift the arm up to the side

  7. Deltoid Muscle • Posterior (back)—extends and laterally rotates the arm

  8. Rotator Cuff Muscles • Supraspinatus • Infraspinatus • Teres Minor • Subscapularis

  9. Supraspinatus • Assists deltoid in A-Bduction

  10. Infraspinatus • Laterally rotates arm • Helps keep head of humerus in the socket of the scapula

  11. Teres Minor • Same as infraspinatus

  12. Subscapularus • Medially rotates arm • A-Dducts arm • Helps hold head of humerus in socket of scapula

  13. Sternocleidomastoid • Rotation • Turning the head

  14. Rectus Abdominis • Flexes the trunk • As in a crunch

  15. Obliques • External—lateral flexion • Reaching across body

  16. Obliques • Internal—lateral flexion and rotation • Reaching across body

  17. Transverse Abdominis • Compresses abdomin • Sucking in gut

  18. Diaphragm • Raises and lowers the lungs • Allows for expansion and contraction of the lungs for breathing

  19. Iliopsoas • Hip flexion • Walking

  20. Gluteus • Maximus • Hip extension—riding a bike

  21. Gluteus • Minimus • Hip extension, lateral rotation, AB-duction

  22. Quadriceps Muscles • Rectus Femoris • Vastus Lateralis • Vastis Medialis • Vastus Intermedius

  23. Rectus Femoris • Hip flexion • Knee extension

  24. Vastus Lateralis, Medialis, & Intermedius • Knee Extension

  25. Sartorius • Main Fx—Hip flexion

  26. Trapezius • Elevates Scapula • Shrug shoulders

  27. Latissimus Dorsi • A-Dduction of the arm • “Lat” Pulls

  28. Levator Scapulae • Lateral flexion of neck • Moving head from side-to-side

  29. Rhomboids • Major • Minor • Elevation of scapula—pinching scapulas together

  30. Major

  31. Minor

  32. Biceps Brachii • Flexes forearm • Arm curls

  33. Triceps Brachii • Extension of forearm • Dips

  34. Brachialis • Flexion of forearm

  35. AB-ductors of the Hand • Spread fingers out—AB-duct

  36. AD-ductors of the Hand • Brings fingers close together

  37. Extensors of the Hand • Pulls hand upward

  38. Flexors of the Hands • Pull the fingers and hands down

  39. Hand/Forearm Pronators • Flips palm of hand downward

  40. Supinators of the Hand/Forearm • Flips the hand so the palm faces up. • Brachioradialis

  41. Hamstring Muscles • Flex the knee • Extend the hip

  42. Biceps Femoris

  43. Semitendonosis

  44. Semimembranosis

  45. Quadriceps Muscles • Flex hip • Extend knee • See slides 22-24

  46. Gastrocnemius • Plantar flexion of the foot • Points toes downward • Calf raises

  47. Soleus • Plantar flexion of foot

  48. Tibialis Anterior • Dorsiflexes the foot • Pulls toes toward tibia
