Numbers (Bamidbar) 6:1, 2 Again the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, "Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, 'When a man or woman makes a special vow, the vow of a Nazirite, to dedicate himself to the LORD,
What is a vow? • It is a promise • Perform a specific act • Behave in a certain manner • It can be difficult to do • You do it voluntarily
Nazirite Vow • Acted differently or holy • Did not eat or drink anything made of grapes • Did not cut his or her hair • Did not have any contact with anything dead
Samson was a Nazirite • Hebrew name was Shimshon • He was a judge in Israel • He was a Nazirite from birth • He was a very strong man
Samson was a Nazirite • There is an angel of the Lord who appears to the wife of Manoah and tells her that she will bear a son. • She was instructed to not drink wine or strong drink or eat any unclean thing.
Samson was a Nazirite • The son shall have no razor come on his head, he is to be a Nazarite unto God from the womb. • He shall begin to deliver Israel from the Philistines. • He was to be a Nazarite from the womb to the day of his death.
Samson was a Nazirite • While in war he killed 30 men with a jaw bone of a donkey. • He kills a lion. • Later he eats honey from the dead lion’s body. • Did Samson follow his vow?
Samson was a Nazirite • He had a girl friend that was not a believer named Delilah. • She tried to get him to do bad things. • She cut off his hair. • Did Samson follow his vow?
Samson was a Nazirite • He became weak. • His enemies pulled out his eyes. • They put him in prison and laughed at him. • He was very sad and ashamed.
Samson was a Nazirite • His hair grew back. • He was brought out of prison to a pagan temple. • Samson was given his strength back. • He died while destroying the temple.
Lesson #1 - Learn from Samson • Samson made many positive qualities. • He did not keep his promise to the LORD by obeying His commandments. • Bad choices will give you bad consequences.
Lesson #2 – Keep Your Promises • A vow is a promise to do something for someone else or to God. • Yeshua taught to say ‘Yes, yes ' or 'No, no ' when talking to others.
What Did We Learn Today? • We learned about the Nazirite vow and keeping a promise. • We learned about the events of Samson’s life. • We learned about the Yeshua’s teaching about making a vow/promise.
