  8. Existing Bridge Description Bridge No. 00245 • Four-Span, Continuous Steel Multi-Girder Structure built in 1958 • Carries one lane of traffic in each direction • Estimated Average Daily Traffic (ADT) on Flat Rock Hill Road ~116 vehicles (2007) • ADT on Interstate 95 under Bridge No. 00245 ~67,900 (2009) • Structure Dimensions • Total Length = 173’ • Overall Width = 45’ 7” • Roadway Width = Originally 40’ 0” Reduced to 26’ 5” due to concrete barrier curb along Eastern side for girder protection

  11. Existing Bridge Description (cont’d) Bridge No. 00245 • Minimum Vertical Clearance over I-95 = 14’-2” • Reinforced concrete deck with concrete wearing surface • Substructure (Foundation) • Concrete abutments on steel piles • Two intermediate concrete piers and one center concrete pier on spread footings founded on bedrock

  12. Reasons for Project Structure recommended for rehabilitation under the State Bridge Program. • Structurally Deficient: • Overall Superstructure Condition Rating “4” • Jersey Barriers used to keep live loads off fascia girders • Fascia girders exhibit extensive vehicular impact damage • Girders exhibit moderate to heavy rust • Functionally Obsolete: • Minimum Vertical Clearance is Substandard

  13. Reasons for Project Fascia Girder over SB Traffic Impact damage Bearing Pads Sheared bolt due to impact damage

  14. Reasons for Project Steel Girders Rust along underside of structure Piers Light to moderate scaling, rust along underside of structure

  15. Proposed Construction • New two-span continuous multi-girder, high strength weathering steel superstructure • Increased Minimum Vertical Clearance over I-95 • Existing: 14’-2” • Proposed: 16’-3” • Deck will consist of cast-in-place reinforced concrete with membrane waterproofing and an asphaltic overlay. • Structure Dimensions • Total Length slightly increased due to abutment modifications • Match Existing Out to Out Width

  16. Proposed Construction (cont’d) • Pier Repair and Modification • Removal of Intermediate Piers • Reconstruction of Center Pier to form Pier Wall • Concrete Repairs to spalls and hollow areas • Abutments will be modified to accommodate increased loads and raised profile • Addition of heel length • Third row of steel H-piles • Minor concrete repairs to existing abutment stems

  21. Public Utilities Utilities at the bridge site consist of aerial facilities (electric, telecommunication and cable) and a VMS cabinet located Northeast of the bridge. CTDOT has notified the appropriate utility companies of the scheduled project. Utilities will be temporarily relocated as part of the proposed construction activities.

  22. Rights-of-Way Based upon the State boundary map, the width of ROW for Interstate Route 95 at the bridge site is approximately 500 feet. No impacts to private property are anticipated. All work will be within the DOT-ROW.

  23. Project Cost The estimated construction cost for the project is approximately $5,800,000. This bridge replacement is anticipated to be undertaken using Federal and State funds.

  24. Project Schedule Construction of Bridge No. 00245 is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2013 and be completed in the fall of 2014. The schedule is preliminary and is predicated upon the availability of funding.
