Why do we catalog? • to Identifyto find the item for which you are looking • to gather informationto provide access to names, titles, and subject terms associated with specific items • to evaluate and/or select an item
A cataloging record: • serves as a facsimile of the item itself • The record includes: a description of the itemmain entry and added entriessubject headings • PLUS local call number and item information
A MARC record is: a computerized version of a catalog/bibliographic record MARC is an acronym for: Machine Readable Cataloging
Composed of three parts • Leaderthe first 24 characters called the “leader” is a fixed field containing information for the processing of the record • Record Directorytells the computer system which tags are in the record and where they should be placed • Variable fieldsidentifies the general function of the field's data within a record. (A field is an area in which the same kind of bibliographic information is consistently entered)

So, how to we get from this… To this?
Numerous options: • order from a vendor and have the items processed with local information • search database to see if a record already exists and add local info • download a record from SmartPort • enhance an existing record • derive an existing record • catalog from scratch
How do I know which SmartPort database to choose? • ABRI: Acquired Bib Records for INFOhio (these are OCLC records that have already been imported by libraries around the state). • INFO-DEDUPSuperMarc Records • INFO-MEDIACatalog of Area Media Centers. Best choice for AV. • INFO-UNIQnew records not yet deduped. • LCLibrary of Congress (items published in U.S.) • OCLCOCLC WorldCAT – unlimited access to the largest selection of MARC records in the world. Search Separately. • TEMPLINFOhio Templates for both local and commercial items.
How do I know which resource to use? Answer: “Click your heels three time” and say “follow the INFOhio protocol…”
