  8. The Use Of “ May I Help You?”, “What Can I Do For You?”, and “What If …?” We may offer help or service by asking for permission to help, being ready to do something, and giving suggestion to help. • May I help you This is the common expression to offer help or service. The word “May” is a way to get permission to help. It is a formal expression, especially when we offer help older people or customer or someone whom we don’t know. Examples : - May I help you, Sir? - Excuse me, Madam. May I help you?

  9. 2. What can I do for you? It is less formal than “ May I help you?”. If someone needs our help, then we agree to help him, we may say, “What can I do for you?”. It is almost similar with “How can I help you?”. Example:Ardi : Can you help me? Rio : Sure. What can I do for you? 3. What if . . .? “What if + present verb” form can be used to make suggestion about what might happen. It indicates present or future situations. When we are not confident that the person will accept our suggestion or not, we can use “What if . . .?” better than “Let’s . . . or “Shall we . . .?”. Example: You have to go to the library but you look busy today. What if I return the book for you? Your trunk looks heavy. What if we lift it together? It would be lighter.
