3. Graduation Requirements • Earn 21 Units of Credit under the Future Ready Core plus 5 Elective Credits from any area totaling 26 Units

4. Future Ready? What Is It? • It is the NEW Course of Study developed to provide a strong academic foundation so that students are prepared and have many optionswhen they graduate from high school whether they go to college or to work. The main idea is that students graduate. . . . Future Ready!

5. Future Ready Core CoursesCredits • English 4 • English I, II, III, IV • Math 4 • Science 3 • Biology, Earth/Environmental, a physical science • Social Studies 4 • World History, American History I: The Founding Principles and American History II, Civics & Econ

6. Math Requirements • Common Core Math I, Common Core Math II, Common Core Math III, then a 4th Math Course to be aligned with the student’s post high school plans • The terminology of Algebra and Geometry has been eliminated. CCM will be a combination of these areas. • After CCM III current Math terms apply. Ex: Discrete Math, Statistics, Calculus, etc.

PROMOTION 9th English I, two credits in the areas of math, social studies, or science, and three additional electives credits 6 *(Students who fail English are automatically retained in 9th grade) 10th English II, one credit in math, one in social studies, one in science, and two additional electives credits 12 11th English III and enrollment in a program which, if successful accomplished, will result in the completion of graduation requirements credits 18*

10. High School Course Levels • Level 1- Academic • Level 2- Honors • Level 3- Advanced Placement (AP)

11. Grade Point Average (GPA) is one of the three most important factors in college admissions. Every grade in high school matters!

12. Block Schedule • Students take 4 courses/credits each semester. • Each course is 90 minutes • An entire year’s worth of curriculum is compressed into one semester. • Grades start accumulating from day one! No time to “catch up” later in the year!!

Math—9th Grade Choices: Foundations of Algebra-Completed Math 8 with a 76 or below Intro to Math Common Core Math IA and IB – year long class -Students in Math 8 with D / F Test Average Common Core Math I – semester long class -Strong Math 8 students that score a 4 on 8th grade EOG -Students in CCM I with F Test Average Special Topics in Math – semester long -for those that have passed 8th grade CCM I but lack a good foundation (low B / C / D Test Average) – Fall Semester (Elective credit) -Taken in conjunction with Honors CCM II – Spring Semester (Math Credit) Common Core Math II Honors – semester long -For those that have passed 8th grade CCM I with a high B / A Test Average Algebra II Honors – semester long -For those that have passed 8th grade Geometry and earned A or B in Algebra I

19. Social Studies—9th Grade Choices: World History (Standard) World History (Honors) World History is the 9th Grade Social Studies curriculum.

20. Foreign Languages? When to do it? • Foreign Language classes are taught by semester, for example Spanish I and II are taught in consecutive semesters, usually 1st and 2nd Semesters. • Any level beyond level 2 counts as an honor level class (colleges suggest students take as many levels possible through their senior year).

21. Band/Chorus • Most schools prefer you take these type classes all year, which will give 2 elective credits each year

22. 9th Grade Registration Each student will select 8 courses and 3 alternate elective courses. • English • Math • Science • Social Studies • Healthful Living 6-8.Additional Courses Electives Plus 3 alternate electives—as 2nd choice electives

23. 9th Grade Registration Please remember in selecting courses, that the alternate choices that the student select is extremely important. In most cases Rising 9th Graders will receive their Core Courses but the student may not receive the additional electives classes that they choose because many of the classes are not grade level sensitive. So please make sure that the classes that the student select as alternate classes are classes that they really want.

24. Registering for Classes • Students will register on SPAN. • This can be done at home or school. • Students will go into SPAN with the NCWise number and the password they have set up. It must be the student’s account, not parent’s.

25. Option 1-Students Register from Home Students will use SPAN to register from home @ https://span.wcpss.net Open to Students February 25 If Students choose to register from home, please do not finalize your selection Option 2-Students Register from School Students will register in the computer lab at school. Begins March 13 – 19th by school via Social Studies Classes Students will finalize at school, print out a copy for you to review at home. SPAN Registration

26. A Word to the Wise • Remember to balance your academic and social life. • GET INVOLVED ( check out clubs/ teams/organizations) Great way to make friends, helps you learn who you are, and use for college applications. • Get to know your high school counselor. • Be cautious about internet postings- colleges may do internet searches to gain information about you

27. AttendanceMatters By state law… • Attendance is mandatory. Any student that has more than 10absences in a block or modified block class (or 20 absences in a traditional year long class) will be subject to automatic failure (FF)

28. ATHLETIC REQUIREMENTS • 85% Attendance required during the semester prior. • Under 19 on or before October 16th • Must have passed 3 core courses during the previous semester • Must maintain overall 1.5 GPA • Must not be convicted of a felony • Must live in the school district and enroll no later than the 15th day of the semester • May not participate in practice or play if assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS) or Out-of-school Suspension (OSS).

29. LEARNER’S PERMIT • Students in the Wake County Public School System who enroll in driver education will have to pay a $45 fee to take the course • 14 ½ Years old • 30 hours in the driver’s ed classroom • 6 hours actual driving • There are no academic requirements in order to take the driver education class. There are academic requirements in order to apply for a permit or license after finishing the driver education class
