  7. Medieval Art vs. Renaissance Art • Usually religious • 2 dimensional • Sizes are not life like • Not very much detail • Little background detail • Not very colourful • No pictures of what God might look like • Still very religious • But, now there are other topics being painted • Sizes are life like • Personal portraits • Lots of realistic detail • God is likened to man • Beautiful draping • Lots of beautiful colours • More background detail

  8. Renaissance PortraitsWhat do these portraits tell us about values during the Renaissance?

  9. People in the Renaissance thought the middle ages were dark (hence the term The Dark Ages). Meaning, they thought the Dark Ages lacked beautiful art, technology and insightful philosophy. Most of all, they disliked that the Church had so much power over everyone. People during the middle ages were under complete control of the Church. The Church told them how to live their life, if they were going to heaven, and what religion to be. In other words, the Church believed peasants could not think for themselves.

  10. Humanists in the Renaissance didn’t like this; they thought people had the ability to use reason or to think for themselves and that people should have power over their own lives. In other words, Renaissance thinkers valued the individual and their ability to control their own destiny. This is why we see more portraits of individuals during the Renaissance.

  11. What is a true Renaissance man? What objects do you see in this painting? What do they suggest about the interests and abilities of the two young men? In the top left corner there is a small cross, what does the position and size of the cross tell us about religion during the Renaissance.

  12. A Renaissance Man Is…. • A Renaissance man is a man who is a “jack of all trades.” He is educated in everything from dancing, literature, hunting, music, mathematics, science, religion, ect.
