The Orientation Process: • Introductions and Announcements with some “key messages” • Processing: Go to EVERY station, even if you think you’ve completed already • Day #1 Afternoon: Competency Focus • Orientation Day #2 is mandatory for ALL house officers (7:30 a.m.) • No work/no pay until you have a MS license • Come to the Welcome Luncheon at Noon on Day #1!

  4. Hint # 1: Stay in touch! • Read your UMMC e-mail daily! • Read your UMMC e-mail daily! • Read your UMMC e-mail daily! • Make sure your program, and the GME office, have current home phone numbers and addresses at all times. • Learn to TYPE if you don’t know how!

  5. Hint # 2: You are both an employee AND a physician-in-training. • Student loan deferments are now handled through your department / residency program. • The Registrar’s Office (Student Services) continues to maintain records for eventual credentialing and licensing. • Absenteeism may now result in financial loss or dismissal.

  6. Hint # 3: Big Brother is watching you! • HIPAA means being very careful with patient information. • Patient care information should be accessed on a “need-to-know” basis only. • Campus computers are for patient care, education, research, and communication: avoid frivolous e-mail, surfing inappropriate web sites, etc.

  7. Hint #4: Medical Records are a DAILY reality… • Dictate op notes, DC summaries same day. • Sign electronic notes and visit incomplete medical records at least weekly. • Don’t use unacceptable abbreviations. • Never forget, the medical record is a LEGAL document. • If you don’t write it down, it didn’t happen. • If they can’t read it, you might as well not bother writing it down!

  8. Hint #5: Know the scoop on “duty hours.” • 80 hours/week • 4 days off / month • 10 hours off between shifts • Call no more often than every 3rd night • 24 + 6 hours maximum in hospital • Beware of moonlighting… • The GME office and program will monitor

  9. Hint # 6: You are now a professional. Act like one! • Commit to service−Patients come first! • Commit to compassion. • Commit to integrity. • Commit to excellence in all you do. • Respect others. • Dress appropriately; bathe regularly. • Return your library books!

  10. Hint # 7: Physician “competency” has been defined. • Medical Knowledge • Patient Care • Professionalism • Communication Skills • Practice-Based Learning and Improvement • Systems-Based Learning

  11. Hint # 8: The best physicians are skilled learners. • You won’t know it all when you finish training, and even if you do, it will change! • Plan to develop life-long learning habits.

  12. Hint # 9: The best physicians are good teachers. • Teach your patients. • Teach your students. • Teach your colleagues. • Serve on committees as asked.

  13. Hint # 10: You are not alone! Know your institutional support services, and use them as appropriate! • Student-Employee Health • Learning Resources / RML • Information Services/ Help Desk • Human Resources • Campus Security • Resident’s Council • GME Office (gme.umc.edu)

  14. Miscellaneous Reminders: • Fingerprinting and employee physicals to be completed. (LOA without pay if fingerprints not completed) • Old badges will be deactivated; you must exchange old badge to receive new . • All on-the-job injuries MUST be reported to Employee Health. • Never ignore bills!!!
