THE SECOND SPLIT • Took place 500 years after the Eastern Schism • In 1517 CE, a German monk named Martin Luther caused a dramatic change by challenging Catholic medieval practices • He called for a simpler “inner faith” • The church ex-communicated him • His followers established the Lutheran Church and the Protestant Reformation

  5. 95 THESES • Luther took a stand and posted the famous “95 Theses” on a church door in Germany • They were points of debate about practices and beliefs • He was specifically against indulgences as well as transubstantiation

  6. Luther is against: Indulgences Changing of bread and wine into the substance of the body and blood of Christ during Holy Communion. Prayers or actions in the Roman Catholic Church that are believed to free the individual from spending a specified period of time in purgatory. Transubstantiation
