The Inventor ?(s)? • Credit given to Alexander Graham Bell • Received patent in 1876 • Elisha Gray filed a similar patent the same day, two hours later…. • After a long court battle, Bell was recognized as the inventor of the telephone • since the original patent over 600 challenges have been made—all have lost

  3. What to say? “Mr. Watson—come here—I want to see you.” • Bell actually worked on the invention with his assistant Thomas Watson—Watson was a gifted tradesperson and helped build the device • Jan.25, 1915 participated in first transcontinental telephone call with Bell

Was Bell Canadian, Eh?Is the telephone a Canadian Invention? • Well…. • Born March 3, 1847 in Edinburgh, Scotland • 1870 moved to Brantford, Ontario with his parents • Worked in Boston as a professor • Bell said it was invented in Canada, but made in the USA • 1st long distance call made in 1876 in Ontario • Died August 2, 1922 Baddeck, Nova Scotia

  5. Up until the 1930s you could have any colour phone you wanted—so long as it was black. Different colour phones became more common in the 1950s.

  6. Party Line! • In many rural communities in particular ‘party lines’ were still in use until the end of the 1970s. • More than one house was hooked up to the same line, but each house had its own ring tone • But anyone could pick up the phone and listen in….
