  1. MeasurementLesson 4, Part 1 BIG IDEA: A standard unit of measure is necessary for consistency in communication between people. The standard system of measurement used in science is the metric system.

  2. What does the object look like? • Where have you seen it before? • What is it used for? • What do you think it is? Kit Inventory

  3. You are all probably familiar with the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. What happened in that story? There is a similar story that most people have never heard. This story was about Dreadlocks and the three bathtubs. Dreadlocks was lost in the woods and came across a house. She was dirty, tired, and wanted to take a bath and get some rest. Dreadlocks found three bathtubs in the bathroom. She tested each tub with her finger and found one too hot, one too cold and one that was just right. She went into her bedroom to get her things ready for her bath. When she came back, she forgot which tub was just right. She needs your help in testing the three tubs of water and putting them in order form hottest to coldest. Engaging ScenarioLesson 4, part 1 What is the problem in this investigation? What do you need to do? What materials do you have?

  4. Focus Question How can we…

  5. Today we are going to practice using our fingers to measure the temperature of three tubs of water to learn how to find the temperature of water. I predict that _____ because... I think that if _____ then _____ because… If we use _____ then _____ because… Prediction

  6. Planning and Organizing Data You now know that you are going to measure the temperature of the water. How are you going to record the results and observations as you test? Discuss with your group.

  7. Making Meaning Conference • As we look at our class data, discuss in your table groups the following questions: • What does the data tell us about the temperature of the water? • What was the order from hottest to coldest? • Did all the groups find the same results? • What new problem do we have?

  8. Place the cups in order from hottest to coldest based on the temperature that you measured using the thermometer.

  9. Claims and Evidence I claim that… because...

  10. MeasurementLesson 4, Part 2 BIG IDEA: A standard unit of measure is necessary for consistency in communication between people. The standard system of measurement used in science is the metric system.

  12. Dreadlocks finally found her way home. When she got home she was very thirsty. She poured a glass of water from a pitcher that had been sitting on the table overnight and added some ice cubes. While she was drinking the ice water, Dreadlocks wondered how cold the water was and did the temperature change after she placed the ice cubes into the glass of water. How can we help her find this information? Engaging ScenarioLesson 4, part 2 What is the problem in this investigation? What do you need to do? What materials do you have?

  14. Today we are going to practice measuring the temperature of water. This will help us learn how to measure temperature. I think the temperature of the water will ________ after we place ice cubes in the water because… Prediction

  15. Planning and Organizing Data You now know that you will be measuring the temperature of water to see how cold it becomes after ice cubes are placed in the water. We are going to measure the temperature of the water before the ice cubes are placed in the plastic cup and then every minute for 1- straight minutes to observe and record the temperatures. What is the best way to record the results and observations?

  16. Making Meaning Conference • As we look at our class data, discuss in your table groups the following questions: • What does the data tell us about the temperature of the water after ice cubes were placed in the cups?
