  1. Global Warming & Hurricanes Message:Stop Contributing to the Destruction Get Off Coal Now!9/20/17 Bob Powell, Ph.D. physics, MBAexponentialimprovement.com

  2. Close Drake

  3. What A Coincidence! • Last month I reviewed global warming and flooding: even at normal high tide. And storm flooding pictures. • Now is ABNORMAL: 1st time in recorded history, two Atlantic Category 4 hurricanes made landfallin the U.S. in the same year. • Houston Hits the Jackpot!Houston is experiencing its third ‘500-year’ flood in 3 years. How is that possible? • Hurricane Harvey is a 1,000-year flood event unprecedented in scale

  4. Global Warming => Flooding • Global Warming from Greenhouse Gasses • Warmer Planet • Most heat goes into the Ocean • Higher Sea Level: water expands, ice melts (NASA: 8” since 1880, Now: 1.3”/decade) • Warmer means more Moisture in Atmosphere • More Energy for Stronger Storms • More Rainfall • More Flooding: From Rain & Storm Surge

  5. Harvey is a 1,000-year flood event unprecedented in scale Area Covered by 40” of rain: 3643 sq miles! Apart from Harvey, there’s simply no record of a 1,000-year event occupying so much real estate.

  6. Sea Level Rise By 2050: +4” to +24” Now: 8” since 1880

  7. Irma Hurricane Force Wind Area: 6.3X Andrew Irma Hurricane Wind (>74 mph) Diameter = 126 mi ~ Irma: The size of the Width of FL at Cape Coral

  8. The St. Johns River rises from storm surge flood waters from Hurricane Irma on 9/11/17 Jacksonville, Florida

  9. Evacuation Orders: Get Out • The state Department of Emergency Management said as many as 6.3 million Floridians were under evacuation orders … ~ 30% of the statewide Pop • Traffic Jams: … if you have 6 total lanes of freeway, and each is operating at its nominal capacity of 2000 vehicles per hour per lane, you can move at most 12,000 vehicles per hour. If you need to evacuate 120,000 people, that would take 10 hours. • … beyond a certain level, the service rate drops … [to] closer to 1340 vehicles/hr, and the time required to evacuate those same 120,000 jumps by 50% to 15 hrs. • 6.3M/120K * 15 hrs = 52 * 15 hrs = 787 hrs = 32 days !!!

  10. This is HappeningThere is No Global Warming Scientific Conspiracy • Scientists DO NOT CONSPIRE. • They fight! • Scientists are motivated to prove that other scientists are WRONG on experiment or theory

  11. I Do My Part: Solar on my Roof since 2011 In 2016 I produced 84% More than I Used

  12. Why Am I Here? • We want Colorado Springs to do its part • For Starters: Close Drake, Get Off Coal !!! • We Want a Sense of Urgency by City Council • Then Get Off Fossil Fuels Entirely – ASAP • I’ve been blessed with education • It’s my Duty as a Citizen to speak for this • Act NOW! We’ll work hard: FOR & AGAINST

  13. Why Do I Care? Life on Earth!

  14. NASA: Sea Level Rise 1870 - 2000 200mm = 20cm = 7.9”

  15. Military Readiness Threatened • Rising oceans threaten to submerge 128 military bases: report, Navy Times, 7/29/16 • Rising oceans will swallow parts of the world's biggest naval base by the end of the century, according to experts who warn that it will take billions of dollars in upgrades to prepare these facilities. • … a new report from the Union of Concerned Scientists. says a three-foot sea level rise would threaten 128 U.S. military bases, valued at roughly $100 billion. • Who's Still Fighting Climate Change? The U.S. Military, National Geographic, 2/7/17 • Ten times a year, the Naval Station Norfolk floods. … All it takes … is a full moon, which triggers exceptionally high tides.

  16. Sea Level Rise – How High? • National Geographic: … over the past century, the Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 4 to 8 inches • Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change: we can expect the oceans to rise between 11 and 38 inches … by 2100, enough to swamp many of the cities along the U.S. East Coast.
