2. School Grades Basic ModelAssessment-Based Measures Included in School Grades for All School Types 50% 50%

3. Writing Component • Schools earn points for the percentage of students who meet or exceed the performance standard. • Example: If 75% of students meet the standard then the school receives 75 points for this component • Maximum 100 points

4. 2012 Changes to FCAT Writing Responses were scored holistically as draft writing, but scoring decisions included expanded expectations regarding the following: • Increased attention to the correct use of standard English conventions, which had been scored with leniency in the past • Increased attention to the quality of details -requiring the use of relevant, logical, and plausible support in responses earning high scores

5. 2013 FCAT 2.0 Writing • With the increases in the scoring expectations educators requested that the time for the assessment be increased • The time available for the assessment will increase from 45 to 60 minutes in 2013

6. School Grade Standards for Writing • May 2012: SBE adopted an emergency rule setting the writing standard for 2012 school grades at 3.0 • October 2012: SBE will review the school grade writing standard, currently 4.0 in rule

7. Writing Content Advisory Committee • Comprised of Florida educators • Identified the example papers (anchor papers) used to define the writing expected at each score point from 1 to 6 for each grade level

8. Writing Reactor Panel • Reviewed the test design, anchor papers, and expectations • Composition • Superintendents • Teachers • Student • Postsecondary institutions • Businesses • Community organizations

9. Writing Reactor Panel • Provided two recommendations • Based on content mastery that should be expected of students • Based on both content mastery that should be expected balanced with the current level of student achievement
