  2. A T O M Nucleus Protons Neutrons Electrons 1. 673 x 10-24g 1. 675 x 10-24g 9. 110 x 10 -28 g charge: +1 0 -1

  3. The atomic number of an atom is the number of protons in the nucleus of that atom. The mass number of an atom is the sum of the number of protons and neutrons in its nucleus. Atoms of the same element that have different masses are calledisotopes.

  4. Periodic Table of Elements Johann W. Döbereiner: 1817, 1829 Triads:Ca, Sr, Ba;Li, Na, K;Cl, Br, I. Julius Lothar Meyer 1869 Dimitri Mendeleev Periodic law: when the elements are studied in order of increasing atomic weight, similarities in properties recur periodically

  5. H. G. J. Moseley 1913 Periodic law: the chemical and physical properties of the elements are periodic functions of atomic number (Z) „Long form” of periodic table is used Periods Groups or families

  6. Representative elements NOB L E GA S E S Non- metals • Transition • elements Metals Lanthanoids Actinoids

  7. PRINCIPLE: Elements are arranged according to increasing atomic number in horizontal rows /periods/ and in vertical columns /groups or families/ • 6th period:14 elements are extracted and placed at the • bottom of the table /Lanthanoids or rare • earth metals/ • 7th period: 14 elements are extracted also /actionoids/
