  2. Venezuelan Government • Type: Federal Republic • President: Hugo Chavez, Vice President: Ramon Carrizalez, Cabinet: Council of Ministers appointed by the president. • There are 9 political parties and Hugo Chavez is a part of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela or PSUV.

  3. Venezuelan Economy • Hugo Chavez controls all of Venezuela’s oil which accounts for more than 90% of their export earnings. • Hugo Chavez also controls all cement and steel companies along with petroleum, communications, and electricity sectors. • The unemployment rate is 8.5%.

Hugo Chavez • Born: July 28, 1954 in Sabaneta, Venezuela. • Elected president in 1998. • In 1992 Hugo Chavez tried to overthrow the president Carlos Perez and was put in prison for two years and was pardoned by president Rafael Caldera and when out of prison he gained popularity and was elected president as a leftist reformer.

Problems in Venezuela • Since Hugo Chavez has taken office crime rate has jumped an astounding 80%. • Between 60 and 100 people are killed on an average Caracas weekend. • Also the unemployment rate has risen to 13% since Hugo Chavez has taken office. • Unemployment in Venezuela might also mean more Venezuelan immigrants in the U.S.

  6. Solution to Venezuelan Problems • We must the watch threat of the increasing Venezuelan military. • We have to some how limit the growing power that Hugo Chavez has over Venezuela • We also have to help with the poverty in Venezuela
