  1. Candle Light Is it really what it looks like?

  2. Observations: Key to scientific discovery! • Look closely at the following pictures. • Jot down in your science notebook what you immediately see. • Look closer, do you see anything else?

  3. First Picture

  4. Now conference with your table what do you see. Use whisper voices.

  5. Second Picture: Repeat same process. Observe, then write in notebooks.

  6. Discuss with partners.

  7. Third picture: Repeat same process. Observe, then write in notebooks.

  8. Discuss with partners.

  9. Fourth Picture: Repeat same process. Observe, then write in notebooks.

  10. Discuss with partners

  11. Observations: Is everything as it first appears? • Why are observations important? • What senses should you use for good observations?

  12. Look, Listen and Observe

  13. You are “bright” students…… • Write AND draw what you just saw in your notebooks

  14. Discuss with your team • Share results • Come up with a complete description of what just happened.

  15. We all agree that…… • Yes, I ate a candle • Brainstorm what it could possibly be made of. • What was the candle? • What was the wick?

  16. The Wick • Why do you think the wick did what it did? What other foods would you test?

  17. How could you test to find out? • Look at items we have here. • What other items would your team like to have? • Decide who can bring in what.

  18. We will learn to make 2 types of observations: • Qualitative • Quantitative

  19. Qualitative • Dealing with the qualities of something

  20. Qualitative Small Beautiful Green Grass Great View Nice Atmosphere

  21. Quantitative • Things that can be measured

  22. I will be 12 Soon! • I love my brother!

  23. 38,365 Seats Fences: LCF to RCF - 6 ft            RCF to RF foul pole - 21 ft

  24. It is time to light it up! As a team, make your candle!

  25. Back to the Candle Lab: • Make 2 Qualitative observations for your candle. • Make 2 Quantitative observations for your candle.

  26. Exit Ticket • Why are observations important?

  27. Exit Ticket • What surprised you most in science class today?
