  3. Importance? • Major defeat for the regular Continental army • Almost all SC controlled by Br • Br convinced the militia would not stand & fight the Br army • Gates replaced as commander of the Southern arm of the Continental Army by Nathanael Greene

  4. If the Br control SC, they can continue their strategy northward… Partisans are all that stands between the British and the full control of SC Gen. Greene understood the need for his army to coordinate with SC’s partisans in order to fight a destructive war of attrition (called mobile war) that would unbalance and eventually destroy the British ability to fight Nathaneal Greene Statue, Greenviille, SC
