  1. Sedimentary Rocks Osmtann Science

  2. Origins of Sedimentary Rocks Over time, rocks erode and smaller pieces form. The pieces are carried by wind and settle somewhere else.

  3. 3 Main Types CLASTIC • Smaller sediments cemented together CHEMICAL • Chemical reactions form new product ORGANIC • Dead organic material bound together.

  4. CLASTIC COARSE GRAINED …FINE GRAINED

  5. CLASTIC

  6. CLASTIC SANDSTONE: Used in buildings

  7. CLASTIC SANDSTONE DOORWAY

  8. CLASTIC SANDSTONE CASTLE

  9. CHEMICAL SALT: HALITE from the evaporation of ocean or saline lake waters.

  10. CHEMICAL HEMATITE: IRON ORE. Iron and Oxygen combine in solution and deposit as a sediment.

  11. CHEMICAL IRON A piece of a banded iron formation, a type of rock that consists of alternating layers with iron(III) oxide (red) and iron(II) oxide (grey). BIFs were mostly formed during the Precambrian, when the atmosphere wasn't yet rich in oxygen. Moories Group, Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa.

  12. CHEMICAL: Iron Ore This stockpile of iron ore pellets will be used in steel production.

  13. CHEMICAL: Iron Ore IRON ORE IS USED TO MAKE STEEL STEEL CABLES PICTURED TO THE LEFT

  14. ORGANIC Ocean animals called coral create huge deposits of limestone As they die, their skeletons collect on the ocean floor.

  15. ORGANIC

  16. ORGANIC Coal is an organic sedimentary rock that forms mainly from plant debris. The plant debris usually accumulates in a swamp environment. Coal is combustible and is often mined for use as a fuel.
