  3. JUMP • DISD Staff Development Opportunity - 3 Day Immersion in Web2.0 Tools • Move from Teacher-Centered to Student-Centered • Philosphy: Teachers don’t need to be experts with the tools, they just need to be willing to put them in the hands of students.

The Ultimate Gift MS Book Study • Project was completed outside of all classwork on a volunteer basis • Students met 3 times during reading of the book with a facilitator for discussion • Students used the ASK process to create questions for the author • Students had a one hour Author Visit with Mr. Jim Stovall

TAKS Writing • Teachers met over DL to discuss “how it would look” • Teachers shared prompt, rubric and student expectations for peer conferences with classes • Students simulated TAKS Writing Test • Teachers numbered the papers and shared them with the other class • Students scored peer paper using TAKS Writing Rubric • Students peer conferenced through DL equipment

  9. TAKS & Instructional Videos • Created to improve parent involvement • TAKS Videos • Instructional Videos for Students and Parents

Chamber of Commerce • School District asked to do Bond Presentation at Chamber Meeting • Team of five 5th graders interviewed and videotaped Chamber members as they came into meeting • While meeting was going on students created and edited a podcast about what the Chamber of Commerce does • Bond Passed!

  11. Visit to North Pole • 1st Grade students wrote persuasive letters to Santa • Not just what they want but WHY they deserve it • Hooked up two classes at a time • Santa & Mrs. Clause were at North Pole (DHS) • Sing 2 songs • Santa pulls letters out of a mailbox and reads “selected” ones • Santa reads the name of every child and announces they are all on the “nice list”
