  3. Ahoy, 6th Grade Buccaneers, You Can Be a Bookaneer! What is it? A library club When will it meet? 2:35 until 3:35, the 1st Wed. of each month and Wed., Sept. 7 Who can join? Any 6th grader who likes books and has no library obligations How can you join? The first 50 eligible students to sign up in the library starting Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 7:00 am will receive invitations.

  5. Bookaneer Pirate Party Bookaneers Pirate Party When: Wednesday, October 6, from 2:35 until 3:35 P.M. Please make sure that you have a way home at 3:35; as much as we like you, the librarians can not take you home. Where: RFMS Library Snacks: A treat will be provided, but you need to bring a drink or extra food if you get incredibly hungry. Speaker: Our special guest will be Mr. Bobby Jackson (aka Bloody Bob), our resident expert on Texas history and pirate lore. Activities: Be ready to participate in the “Library Treasure Hunt.” Bring this invitation. It will be your entry for lots of neat door prizes! If you don’t plan to participate as a Bookaneer, let us know right away. We have a waiting list for your place. Bookaneers Pirate Party When: Wednesday, October 6, from 2:35 until 3:35 P.M.   6. Bookaneer Pirate Party • Students pick up bags of treasure (candy) as they arrive. Each bag has a pirate flag with the color of the student’s team on it. • Texas history teacher does presentation on Pirates (about 15 minutes) while students eat. • Students get with their teams and receive the first clue to their treasure hunt (scavenger hunt already set up in the library) • First team to complete treasure hunt gets to pick a prize from the treasure chest. • Door prizes are drawn from invitations that students must bring with them to the party; they clean up, and are dismissed.

Bookaneer Olympics • As students arrive, they receive a bag of popcorn with a name tag in the color of their team. • Students sit at the table with the same color as their name tag (five colors of the Olympic rings. • IRS students present a play for opening ceremonies. • Teams meet their coaches (teacher volunteers), and create name, flag, and cheer for judging. • Students participate in activities such as Dewey Dash, Get A-Head with Books, Pass the Book, and Orange You Glad to Be in the Library. 2 points for 1st place; 1 point for second. • Team with the most points gets plastic gold medals. • Students gather for door prizes and are then dismissed.

Bookaneer Harry Potter Party • Send invitations by owl post and must know the password to enter the library. • Students receive Bertie Botts Beans (jelly beans) as they arrive. • Students gather around the sorting hat, I sing the sorting hat song, and then they are called up one at a time to find out what house they are in. We give them cards that have their name and a picture of their house on them. • Students move to the other side of the library (Hogwart’s Hall) and sit with their house (IRS members are prefects and keep them cheering, etc. • Students play Harry Potter trivia, and the winning team is awarded the golden snitch (a book mark with a picture of Harry and the snitch). • Door prizes are handed out and students are dismissed.

Who: 7th and 8th Graders When: Wed., Aug. 25 2:35 until 3:30 Where: RFMS Library Insatiable Readers’ Society If you enjoy reading, or being around people who do, come to our organizational meeting on Wednesday. Plans include reading to elementary school students, plays, book discussions, and writer’s workshops.

IRS at Elementary School • Principal from elementary school came and demonstrated how to select and read a book to children. • Students selected a book and took it home to read and practice. • At next meeting students paired up and read books to each other, then to small groups. • Each student found a prop or stuffed animal to take to introduce his/her story. • Pairs of middle school students were assigned to pairs of kindergarten students. Each student read his/her book while the other kept the younger students on task. • As each group finished, the kindergarten students moved to another group. • Our students gave a bookmark to each student to whom they read.
