  2. OBJECTIVE To gauge your English language readiness for the workplace

  3. THE IMPLEMENTATION OF EET Students must sit for both papers (Writing & Speaking) . Results will not appear in the academic transcript. A separate certificate will be awarded. For EET Writing, a student who does not attempt the questions will be categorised as a non-user . For EET Speaking, a student who logs in but does not attempt the tasks will be categorised as a non-user .

  4. CHARACTERISTICS OF EET Framework: The EET is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). CEFR is used by international & standardised tests e.g. IELTS & TOEFL. The levels for the EET are based on CEFR: C2, C1, B2, B1, A2, A1. The highest level is C2 (Proficient User). There is no pass or fail grade in EET.

  6. EET : THE RATING PROCEDURE Categorises candidates into: - Proficient User (C1, C2) - Independent User (B1, B2) - Basic User (A1, A2) Each task is given a score between 1 and 6

  8. EET SPEAKING EET Speaking is a computer-based test. EET Speaking is a collaboration of the: Academy of Language Studies (Content Development) Office of Academic Affairs (HEA) (Policy, Students’ Registration & Results) InfoStructure Department Examination Division Faculties/Campuses

EET SPEAKING Purpose: To assess speaking readiness for the workplace Context: Semi-formal and formal workplace situations Duration: 20 minutes (listening to instructions / dialogues, preparation time & response time) NUMBER OF TASKS: 3 Task 1: Simulated Conversation Task 2: Job Interview Task 3: Oral Presentation

SIMULATED CONVERSATION (Task 1) : • Candidates listen to a speaker informally giving opinions and information about an aspect of life such as places to eat, events to plan, trips for a holiday, etc. Candidates talk to the speaker informally giving opinions and information in response to the situation at hand. • Task: Short responses to a prompt of simulated conversation. Candidates must provide sufficient and relevant content in response to the question posed by the speaker. • Candidates are given 20 seconds to prepare, and one minute to respond.

  11. Job interview (Task 2) : • Taking part in an interactive interview and respond to three spoken questions on personal/work related topics. Each question is presented separately, and the candidate records his/her spoken response before the next question is presented. The task is designed to elicit short responses to questions on familiar and concrete topics, and the rubric is phrased in the 1st person to approximate interaction with an interlocutor. • Task: Short and substantial responses to job-related interview questions. Candidates must provide sufficient and relevant content in response to the questions posed by the speaker. • Question 2(a): 10 seconds to prepare and one minute to respond • Question 2(b): 20 seconds to prepare and two minutes to respond • Question 2(c): 30 seconds to prepare and two minutes to respond

  12. Oral Presentation (Task 3) : • A three-minute presentation of information provided in visual representation (charts, table, graphs, diagrams, maps, processes, itinerary). The candidate records his/her spoken presentation of the task. The task is designed to elicit an organized speech bringing about functions such as description, narration, explanation, comparison and contrast and summarizing, among others. • Task: Candidates are expected to speak in an organized, rather detailed and well-structured manner in describing and synthesizing information provided in the visuals. • Candidates are given one minute to prepare and three minutes to present.

  13. EET WRITING Purpose: To assess writing readiness for the workplace Context: Semi-formal and formal workplace situations Duration: 1½ hours Tasks: Task 1: Initiate or respond to an e-mail correspondence in 150 words. Task 2: Respond to an assigned work-based task in 250 words.

  17. EET WRITING (cont’d) Sample Question for Task 2 Your head of department has instructed you to write an article of about 250 words on what you gained from a seminar you recently attended. The article is to be published in your company’s newsletter. Include the following information: • what the seminar was about • knowledge gained • relevance to your company

General Preparation • Review your previous writing assignments carefully, look for recurring errors. • Practiseyour English speaking skills. • Review the different grammar parts. • Get the EET Guide, do the sample questions provided in it and also go through the sample answers. • Read the tips provided in the book on how to tackle the EET speaking and writing tests. • Get a good night’s sleep before the exam. Everything boils down to you being alert during the exam. • Be positive! You are very likely to be more prepared for the exam than you think you are.
