What is a Constellation? A constellation, in scientific terms, is an internationally defined area of the celestial sphere. In normal human terms, it is a group of stars that form a pattern in the sky.
What are the origins of the constellations? Constellation names trace as far back as Mesopotamia, 5000 years ago. Since then, early astronomers continued to document and name them. A very prominent society in naming the constellations was the Ancient Greeks.
How are constellations used in modern astronomy? Constellations bring order to the sky by dividing it into smaller sections.
What are some prominent constellations? One of the most known constellations is the Ursa Major, or otherwise known as the “Big Dipper.” It resembles a soup ladle in one section, and when you look at all the stars at once, it shows a bear.
What are some prominent constellations? Continued. Another prominent constellation is Orion, which is a star formation that resembles a hunter.
