  3. Attendance Policy In accordance with Federal and State Law; • Students must be in attendance 180 days of school per year. • School hours are 8:35am – 3:05 pm (Wednesdays 8:35am – 1:50pm). • Please have notes for absences on the day the student returns to school, otherwise he/she will not be able to take tests or quizzes missed during those days. • Excessive absences/tardiness may jeopardize grades and promotion to the next grade level.

  4. Early pickup • For emergency ONLY. • Report to the office. • Students will only be released to people listed on emergency contact cards with picture I.D. • Any work missed is the responsibility of the student to make up. PLEASE, schedule doctors’ appointments after school.

  5. Uniform Policy Aventura Waterways is a mandatory uniform school. • Khaki bottoms No jeans • Light blue polo shirts Spirit Shirts may be worn on Fridays

  6. Arrival • All students must wait on the P.E. court for their teacher to pick them up. • Students will be walked into the class by their teachers at 8:25am. DO NOT have your child wait inside this building.

  7. Dismissal • Parents can pick students up using the drive thru area. Please have the parent pick-up paper on your windshield. This makes the pick-up process much faster.

  8. Security In accordance with School Board Rules. Students and parents may not enter the building before or after school Parents and visitors must present a photo ID and sign in. Conferences/meetings to see teacher need to be scheduled.

  9. HOME LEARNING ! • Approximately 60 minutes a day. • Assigned Monday through Friday • By school board rule 6GX13-6A1.23 • Amended in 1998 • 30 minutes of reading each day. • Homework is Extremely Important. Please make sure your child is completing their home learning.

  10. Classroom Supplies 2 Composition Notebooks (writing and science) 2 duo-tang folders (math and reading) 1-2 Yellow Highlighters and colored pencils I’d like to sincerely thank you for the supplies you provided for our class!

Test - Grades • Students will take tests in reading, language arts, math and science based on the material, skills and concepts covered during the week. • Parents will receive a Progress Report and Report Card in order to inform you of your child’s progress. • Grading Scale A 99-90 B 89-80 C 79-70 D 69-60 F 59-0

  12. 3rd Grade FCAT • State Law requires that all 3rd grade students pass the Reading FCAT with a minimum score of 2 in order to be promoted to 4th grade. FCAT will be administered April 22-25, 2014. • In the past, there have been two alternate assessments which could promote them to the 4th grade, if they did not pass the FCAT.

  16. FCAT AUTHOR’S PURPOSE What does the author mean when he/she writes ____________? What is the author’s purpose in writing this article? Why did the author write this story/article? CAUSE AND EFFECT What caused ____ to _____? What effect did ___have on ___? What are the events that caused__ ? What might happen if ______? What is the effect of ______? Why does a character take a particular action _______?

  17. PMP (Progress Monitoring Plan) • This is for students who are having areas of difficulty. • Ex. Reading or Math • This is used to identify the problems and address them in a timely manner. • We then provide whatever resources that are needed for your child. • We will continually monitor their progress to make sure they are on grade level.

  18. AR tests and books • Our class will check books on Thursday’s. • Your child will be getting a Reading Log. They are to record the books they have read during the week. Please help them each evening by listening to them and signing the log. Ask them questions about the story. They will take a short comprehension test on the computer after they have completed the book. After they have taken a test, they will be allowed to take another book from the Media Center. This is only allowed once a week as per the school rules. • Students will be allowed to check out three books. One will be in Spanish and two in English. They are to check out at least one chapter book at their AR level.

Reading Log READING LOG Name: _____________ Date: ___________ Date Title Author No. Pages Parent/Guardian Signature • In order to improve reading, you must read 30 minutes per night. • If you have read a chapter book, or only part of a book, please write which pages you have read. For example: Chapter 2 or pages 8-15. • The reading log will be checked every other Monday! It will be due at the end of the month!

Honor Roll Students will receive diplomas every grading period based on their grades: Principal’s Honor Roll Perfect Attendance Academic Average 3.6-4.0 Honor Roll Effort Grades – All 1’s No absences during Conduct Average 3.6-4.0 the entire marking No C’s grades allowed period Academic Honor Roll Academic Average 3.0-3.5 Effort Grades – All 1’s and 2’s Conduct Average 3.0-4.0

  21. PTSA - VOLUNTEER • PTSA touches every aspect of life at Aventura Waterways. PLEASE JOIN ! • Fill a Volunteer application. Obtain one from the main office. • Applications will be cleared by MDCPS prior to volunteering. • Parents must be cleared as a volunteer before chaperoning field trips or participating in class activities.
