  1. Smoking is a big problem.

  2. Why smoking is a problem? People are getting sick and dying from the effects of smoking and second hand smoking. Smoking costs a lot of money - Smoking a pack a day costs around $4,500 per year. Why is smoking so bad for us? Cigarette smoke has over 4,000 chemicals such as paint stripper, toilet cleaner, rat poison and car exhaust. More than 60 of the chemicals can cause cancer.

  3. Some health facts... Smoking harms almost every part of your body. 80 % of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking. It also is a major cause of heart attacks, heart disease and strokes. Smokers have a lot of lung and breathing problems too. Children that live around smokers get sick more often than other children.

  4. Deaths caused by smoking About half of the people who have smoked will die by a smoking related disease. Smokers live at least 15 less than someone who haven’t smoked before. About 5,000 deaths each year in NZ are direct smokers or from second hand smoke - that's 13 people a day.

  5. How can we stop the problem? I think we could stop the problem by putting up the prices for cigarettes. Ban cigarettes from more places round NZ. Encourage people to quit by advertise the harmful effects of smoking. Educate younger people to how bad smoking is for them. Every cigarette you smoke is doing you damage.
