  3. We cannot live without the sun’s heat and light or the air that we breathe, but these givers of life can also become dangerous killers . Moreover they can behave even more dangerously when they combine with that other great natural force : water .

  4. The largest and most destructive result of this combination are hurricanes(also called cyclones or typhoons). These huge storms can destroy countries in just hours . Surprisingly, tornado winds actually blow much faster than hurricanes and can reach 450 kph. In fact, tornadoes have such fantastic power that they carry off people , cars and even buildings.Huge ’twisters’ appear most commonly in central US states and cause much destruction there .

  5. By contrast , the fastest hurricane wind speeds are little more than half as great. In fact , tropical storm are called hurricanes when winds reach a speed of ’ just’118 kph.Tornadoes are not nearly as destructive as hurricanes for one reason : size. Tornadoes are never more than a few hundred metres wide , whereas hurricanes may be as much as 800 kilometres across. The US National Sever storm Forecast Center watches developing hurricanes more closely than ever before.

  6. With information from space satellites , weather balloons and weather station on land and at sea , it watches storms and gives warnings more accurately then ever. When Hurricanes Andrew hit Florida in 1992 , it did huge damage and became the worlds most expensive hurricane. However , most people had escaped by car ,so few died. Later , reconstruction was rapid .

  7. Back in 1970 ,things were far worse for East .Pakistan (now Bangladesh). There was nothing to stop floods. Moreover , the transport system was so bad and the people so poor that they could not escape .They could only wait helplessly as the most destructive hurricane in history approached with a 15-metre tidal wave and winds that blew as fast as 240 kph.It was such a huge disaster that million people died.

  8. Nothing can stop the forces of natural .but the Florida emergency showed that technology ,transport wealth save lives .However, countries like Bangladesh still lack such resources.International disaster prediction rescue work have improve since 1970, but not enough. Many future victims’ lives therefore depend on the will of the fortunate rich to help lift the unfortunate poor from poverty.
