  2. Why built? • Made by an ancient race of giants. • Conjured up by Merlin • The real reason it was built is unknown • However, it is an accurate astronomical calendar

  3. What does it look like? • Outer ring of giant “doorways” • Ring of small upright stones (gravestones) • Horseshoe of trilithons (13’6”) • Heel-stone (marking where sun rises in east at summer solstice)

  5. Statues of Large Heads • 2000 miles from nearest city • Made of volcanic ash • Famous for monoliths called “Moai” • 13 feet high & weigh 14 ton on average • 887 statues (288 placed) • Called “Easter Island” because explorer landed there on Easter • Polynesians create a culture

  6. What happened? • Society grew to 10,000 • Island could not sustain that population • Bloody civil war & cannibalism • Culture was lost to inner turmoil, slavery and outside influence

  7. HOMEWORK • Bring a picture of a modern “megalith” that may be confusing to future cultures • 10 points possible • If anyone else has the same “megalith,” you will get 7/10 • BE ORIGINAL!
